248. Cheedai varieties

DSC00078

Unlike murukku, we have to be little bit careful while preparing cheedai. Even if the proportion of ingrediants is slightly varied, we won’t get good result.

Uppu cheedai :

raw rice : 1 cup

urud dal : 1 tsp

white ellu – 1/2 tsp

salt – 1/4 tsp

butter – 1 tsp

jeera – 1/2 tsp

cooking oil – 250 gm

asafoetida – 1/4 tsp

Method of preparation :

Wash rice and allow to dry in a cool place. Make it a nice powder. Dry roast urud dal and make it a powder. Along with these two flours, add salt, butter, jeera,  ellu and  asafoetida. Mix gently by adding little water.  We have to knead in such a way that the consistency will be like chapathi dough. Heat cooking oil in a pan. Make small balls and put them in hot oil and cook in a medium flame. When they turn light golden brown colour, we can take out from oil.

Vella cheedai :

raw rice : 1 cup

urud dal : 1 tsp

white ellu – 1/2 tsp

jaggery  – 1/2 cup

butter – 1 tsp

coconut  – 1 tsp

cooking oil – 250 gm

Method of preparation :

Wash rice and allow to dry in a cool place. Make it a nice powder. Dry roast urud dal and make it a powder. Along with these two flours, add  butter and   ellu. In a kadai, put jaggery and little water. When jaggery is dissolved, filter it to remove dust and small stones. Then again keep jaggery water in the kadai add cocunut and flour mixture. When it becomes little thick, switch off the gas and allow it to cool.   We have to knead in such a way that the consistency will be like chapathi dough. Heat cooking oil in a pan. Make small balls and put them in hot oil and cook in a medium flame. When they turn light golden brown colour, we can take out from oil.

238. Janmashtami

We celebrate the birthday of Sree Krishna as “Janmashtami” or “Gokulashtami” or Krishna Jayanthi”. It falls on ashtami day after krishna paksha in the month of shravana as per madhva calender.  All the Hindus celebrate this festival very grandly as Krishna is favourite God to all. Normally we observe fasting throughout the day and prepare neivedhyam items in madi.

In the evening we decorate the house and kolam afresh in front of the house. We also draw “Putta krishna pada” from this kolam. We have to draw krishna pada in such a way that Lord krishna comes from rangoli to our puja room and sit in the plank kept in front of krishna photo. We have to imagine that He walks step by step.

We have to put rangoli on the plank and keep krishna vigraha in a plate. We have to do pooja in the usual way with  kunkum, manjal, chandan, akshadai, gejavasthram, flowers, garlands, ghenta, dheepa, dhoopa and aarathi to the photo and vigraha. We have to say slokas, sthothrams and songs on Lord Krishna while doing the pooja. We have to keep thamboolam, cocunut, all types of fruits, milk, curd, butter, aval, murukku, cheedai and laddu varieties as neivedhya.

After performing puja, we have to give arghya. We have to keep a lemon and a coin in our right palm and pour water, milk and again water three times. We have to keep a bowl under our right arm. We have to say the arghya manthram while giving arghya.

அர்க்ய மந்த்ரம் :

After giving arghya we can take simple tiffin along with fruits and nevedhyam items.

179. Adhika masa

In the lunar calender, 354 days comes in a year. The solar calender consists of 365 days. An adhika masa comes in a lunar calender once in 32 months, 16 days and 24 minutes. For the lunar calender followers, a month begins with amavashya. In the year 2015, adhika masa is from June 17 to July 16. This year will have 13 months instead of 12 months.

The adhika masa  is dedeicated to Lord Krishna. During adhika masa, we have to follow spiritual things. This month is for self-development, self-revaluation and self-assessment. We have to do lot of punya karya during this period. Fasting, reciting and hearing manthras & slokas and performing pujas are to be done. Also, we have to do some dhanas compulsorily during this period. The religious rituals help us to get rid of our sins.

Generally the dhanas given are thambula, deepa, apopa(adirasam in kanchu pathram), fruits, gajavasthram, anna, vasthra, rava laddu  or anything else you can. We have to give these items in the count of 33 to brahmanas. While giving these dhanas we can keep mangala items like vetrilai, pakku, seeppu, kannadi, balai, dhakshanai, arisina, kunkuma, palam, kaadolai, karugumani, blouse bit, akki, bella, belai,  poo and hanju.

Normally we won’t perform any shubakarya like grahapravesam, upanayanam and marriage during adhika masa. So, in the mechanical life, let us spare some time for puja, vratha and dhana during this month.
