496. American Culture Values

I had been to America thrice from India. I noticed some unique culture values which Americans had.  I was motivated by their independent nature. Every human being respect other’s individuality.  They give way to others privacy and own space. In India, whoever we meet may try to interfere in all our personal matters and they also think that there is nothing wrong in that attitude, as they care for them.

Americans are very proud of being self-reliant, or being able to take care of themselves, and they tend to think others should be self-reliant as well. When someone reaches a goal, that is typically seen as the result of his or her own hard work.  The recommendation does not enter  into the official career.  The children leave home at early  age to look after themselves.

Elders in particular typically need more peace and quiet and may not want to be disturbed. Nobody can start to gossip with them.  This means they often tell you what they think and they will be assertive about what they want. Being assertive is generally seen as a good thing in America. They won’t talk something keeping in mind. They are more expressive.

Americans like to believe the idea that all people should have equal opportunities.  Men and women should be treated equally, and men are not viewed as better than women.   When greeting someone, Americans tend to say, “Hi” or, “Hello.”  Americans can be competitive and often work hard to achieve their goals. Competition often leads Americans to be very busy. Many Americans view competition is a good thing. They value time and efficiency very much.

Really, the above qualities captured my mind and I also wish to follow them.

495.Role of women in changing generations

We know very well that the role of women is very important in all generations.  In the very old days, women took a lead role in the society. After that, gradually women were kept in houses with the remarks that they are fit for household works only and men only can take care of worldly affairs. Now, women started to realise their capability.

Women’s role has changed at an accelerating rate. Now, women have entered in all the tough fields, equal to men.  Women’s impact is due to the fact that they are getting educated sincerely. The women’s rights movement is a good example of how women have come across very strongly, fighting for their political, social and economical status.

In our grandmother period, women were getting married at young age and the married women are not allowed to study in school or college. Next, in our mother period, women got the opportunity to study in school  and some had the chance to study in college also. Some women worked as teachers, nurses and in Government offices. In our generation, women were allowed to study in Engineering and medical colleges. Some more professions are allotted to women. The next generation has come and sky is the limit for them. They can do anything and everything they like.

The gender myth of old where men work and do the hard labour or women stay at home and raise children is becoming a thing of the past. Women have entered in all fields and proved they are fit for all works. The world is changing everyday, every minute, and even every second. Significant generational differences occurred on attitude items relating to sharing of child care, parent care, and household tasks by men and women. Men of present generation are willing to accept this change.

So, even if the role of women in the society has changed in generations, they didnot forget their duty. They discharge it efficiently and smartly. Let us congratulate all women for their duty-consciousness.

474. My vote – My choice

Voting is our right as well as our duty. We should feel privileged to live in a democratic country. It is through our votes that we create our future. If one vote without any responsibility, it will put us into a dark future. One should utilize its right to vote for a right leader which rises above the narrow ideologies of color, caste, religion, and creed.

I  will honour my right & privilege and be a responsible citizen by voting for a leader who is passionate about improving the welfare of the citizens.  But, sometimes we may like the activities of the leader alone, as his partymen would have done something which we may not like. Also, the party which we like may have alliance with another party in which we may not have faith.

We all are also worried about the problems like Corruption, Unemployment, Illiteracy, Increasing crime rate, Terrorism, Poverty and so on. While choosing our leader we should see whether he has got the capacity to solve the above problems. Vote is the biggest weapon for bringing any  change in the society.

Do leaders come from a different planet or are they made up of some superhuman stuff. Obviously not. They are among us, hidden, waiting to come out & make a difference. We should encourage them and help them to come out & succeed. Every vote counts. Though it seems like an endless sea of people are there to vote, every vote counts. When the national attitude changes from thinking “My vote doesn’t make a difference”, then the numbers increase and a multitude of people voting will make the difference. The responsibility lies on every individual.

Voting is the way to express the opinion of a citizen in a democratic nation. Voting is crucial to activating the democratic process. Voting is how we participate in a civic society. It’s the way we teach our children  how to be citizens, and the importance of their voice.
So, let us vote as per our choice.

452. Inspiring Self-Powered Village

Odanthurai Gram Panchayat situated 40 kilometers north of Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu. Everyday we are hearing news about Global warming, depleting natural resources, increasing carbon emissions, soil and water pollution. Self  powered Odanthurai has set an example by producing its own green power for its needs.

The most notable among  Odanthurai’s self-help ventures is the 350-kw wind power generator that was set up in 2006 under the direction of a well functioning gram panchayat.  The Panchayat President  Shanmugam thought, “Why not we set up a wind power project under panchayat ownership? After all a village community is the most legitimate owner of land and wind, the two natural resources that are enough for power generation.” Now, the panchayat has not only been generating electricity for their own use, but also selling power to Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB).

Though the panchayat faces three hours of power disruption every day, it ensures that drinking water pumping operations and street lighting are not affected, as renewable energy is used for such needs. Streetlights burn in the two hamlets of Vinobhaji Nagar and Kalarpudur even when load shedding is in force, as they are run on solar energy.

Under the Green House Scheme of the State government, the Panchayat has till now built 850 houses and handed over to the real beneficiaries. It is highest record in the State. For his better performance, the people in the panchayat gave an opportunity to Shanmugam as an independent candidate between 1996 and 2006 though he is just 10th qualified. Since the panchayat was reserved for female, people elected Shanmugam’s spouse S Lingammal between 2006 and 2016 without a serious election campaign. Village panchayat presidents, college professors, students, foreign delegates and IAS officers have been visiting the village often, to learn the administrative perspective.

Let us salute Mr. Shanmugam for setting his village a model of inspiring self-powered village.

444. Thailand Cave Rescue

The Moo Pa (Wild Boars)  Soccer Academy team, whose ages range from 11 to 16, became trapped with their 25-year-old coach, Ekaphol Chantawong, inside the six-mile Tham Luang cave in the Doi Nang Non mountain range on 23 June 2018. Nine days later rescue divers located the team sheltering on a ledge surrounded by water. About two miles of narrow, flooded passageways separated their refuge from the main entrance. Efforts to pump water out began immediately as authorities tried to take advantage of a break in monsoon rains.

A daring rescue mission in the treacherous confines of a flooded Thai cave saved all 12 boys and their soccer coach who were trapped deep within the labyrinth. It ended a grueling, 18-day ordeal that claimed the life of an experienced volunteer diver and riveted people around the world.

The four members of the Thai military — one army doctor and three Navy SEAL members — who had stayed with the team for days came out of the cave together. The rescue operation is officially complete. All members of the Wild Boars soccer team and their 25-year-old coach are safe at the Chiang Rai hospital, the authorities said. The boys and their coach are to spend at least a week in the hospital to help protect them from infection, doctors say.

We are also happy and wish them a long life.

426. When a mobile phone is lost

What to do when a mobile phone is lost?

We have to report to the network provider immediately, when a mobile phone is lost. We can block and stop anyone else using it.  We can use another device to call our mobile number. We can also use our carrier’s mobile app to override our ringer settings and sound an alert. If the lost phone is got by a good person, he may try to return it.  We can text a message as how to reach us. If we are sure that the phone is lost and the data in that phone should not be seen by anybody else, then  we can use the remote wipe functionality to remove data.

The mobile apps from our carriers protection plan  can remotely lock our phone. We can also change password for email and social media. Finally, we have to report the loss to the police. Our network provider will give us our phone’s identification number (IMEI), which we should pass on to the police.

We can use “find my device” to find out the lost mobile phone. For this, we have to type in google search. Then, we have to login into our google account. There we can see the model number, play sound, lock, erase options regarding our lost phone.  In the map, the current location of the phone.  While we can configure Find My Device ahead of time, the service should be available in the event we lose or misplace our phone. It will use Wi-Fi or GPS to help us hunt down your device.

413. How to deal with oversmart people?

We call a person when acts with knowledge and politeness.  To be the center of attraction, some people act to be too smart. We can call them as oversmart.  They are always impatient to show their elegance and make themselves highlighted amongst others. They always take credits for the work that they have not done.

The oversmart  people try to do less work and get more result by showing over smartness. If we try to  avoid them, they will think that we are not competing with them.  If we still think this person is hard to bear,  we should try to minimize the contact with them and avoid as much as possible.

If we get an opportunity to work with them, we have to complete our task with them and let them do whatever they want to do.  We should not argue with them even if they do anything wrong. We should keep ourselves  tranquil and composed. If such people have some knowledge we have to recognize it first. Then, we have to publicly recognize and utilize his/her knowledge by assigning challenging assignments in his/her areas of proficiency, and therefore check how he/she applies and contributes his/her knowledge.

We should understand that intellect is not measured by our IQ alone but its also calculated by our capability to rheostat the sentiments that can avert us from being intelligent. Even if we identify the right things to do,  we will still be doing the wrong thing if we do not succeed to switch your emotions. When we don’t display how our mind works, the over smart person will get astonished by our movements and forget preparing themselves. They may even forget to act over smartly.

We have to   keep backup plan if we involve this kind of person or give them some responsibilities. So, in worst condition, we will have plan B,  if Plan A is not successfully implemented by this kind of people.  We should expressively show that  we view everyone as equal &  not as a superior or inferior.

So, we can also behave smartly while dealing with oversmart people and safe guard us wisely.

400. Lunar eclipse 2018

lunar eclipse 2018

Total lunar eclipses are  sometimes called Bluemoons because of the reddish orange glow of the moon takes on during the eclipse.  A total lunar eclipse occured on January 31, 2018.  The moon was near its perigee on January 30 and so may be described as a  Supermoon.  It is a second fullmoon in the calender month of 2018. Lunar eclipse 2018 was more special because for the first time in 152 years, a supermoon (when the moon is unusually closer to earth), a blue moon (a second full moon in a calendar month) and a blood moon (a moment during an eclipse when the moon turns red)  coincides.

On that day, a total eclipse of the Moon was visible from eastern Europe, eastern Africa, Asia,   Australia, the Pacific Ocean and North America. During this lunar eclipse, the full Moon  passed through the Earth’s shadow (or umbra) lasting around 5 hours and 10 minutes from beginning to end. The Moon  slowly turned from its familiar pearly white color to a reddish colour then back to its original colour all over a period of around five hours.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) broadcasted live images of the Super Blue Blood Moon 2018 phenomena, on NASA TV. The moon  not only appeared red in colour, but was slightly bigger and brighter than usual during the eclipse.

It is believed that eating foods during the lunar eclipse may have harmful effects on the body. One must have light foods that are easy to digest. On this day, our body has a cooling effect, which in turn makes our digestive system slow and produces lesser digestive juices. So,  it is  recommended that we shouldn’t be eating too many heavy foods. Moon is water and our body has 72 percent water; which means the change in the moon will also bring a change in the brain and body. During this day, people go through emotional changes too. We must practice meditation and deep breathing exercises to ensure the day goes by easily.

397. My Mother

My mother’s name is Shakunthala.   She was born on Rishi Panchami day.  We, the daughters and sons’ remember her with love and gratitude. always.  She passed away few years back. When she was alive, I didn’t think about her much. After her death,  I used to remember her love and sacrifice.

My father passed away suddenly, leaving my mother and six children, when I was six years old.   She brought up all of us, very bravely and courageously, facing all the challenges in the life.  Ours is not a rich family.  By God’s grace and with my parents blessings’, we  all had good education, job and other virtues.  I was last of all  and my brothers  & sisters stood like pillars  with her, in making our family to earn good reputation, in the society.

I loved my mother very much.  It is quite natural that everybody loves his/her mother than anything in the world.  She showered unconditional love on all her children equally. After my father’s death, she lived like a Sanyasini.  She spent all her time for the welfare of the children. She felt very happy on seeing  our growth.  She didn’t even spend a second to think about her health or likings. She always lived for us.

Nobody can explain what a mother’s love is. Her love is made up of  joy, pain, sacrifice  and deep affection.  A mother can only show endless  and unselfish love.  She never expected anything from us. She was proud that she had very good 3 daughters-in-law and kind 3 sons-in-law.  The thought of her 9 grand children  gave her  more pleasure and  strength.

I always pray to God  to give His blessings  & my parents’ blessings to us and  make us live in peace and harmony.

392. Investment in Mutual Funds

Mutual Fund is an investment made by many people  for the purpose of investing in  stocks, bonds and other assets.  The common people may not be knowing about the performance of their investments. Hence, they leave it to the control of professional money managers  who allocate the funds in a proper manner  to produce income or capital gain.

Mutual fund units, or shares can typically be purchased or redeemed as needed at the fund’s current  NAV(Net Asset Value)  per share. A fund’s NAV is derived by dividing the total value of the securities in the portfolio by the total amount of shares outstanding.  While investing in mutual funds, a mutual fund investor is buying part ownership of the mutual fund company and its assets. The fund manager is hired by a  board of directors and is legally obligated to work in the best interest of mutual fund shareholders.
One of the largest is the Fixed income category. A fixed income mutual fund focuses on investments that pay a fixed  rate of return, such as Government Bonds, Corporate Bonds or Debt Instruments. The idea is the fund portfolio generates a lot of interest income, which can then be passed on to shareholders.

Another group falls under the moniker Index Funds.  The investment strategy is based on the belief that it is very hard, and often expensive, to try to consistently beat the market. These funds are often designed with cost-sensitive investors in mind.

In mutual funds, fees are classified into two categories, Annual Operating Fees and Shareholder fees. The annual fund operating fees are charged as an annual percentage of funds under management, usually ranging from 1-3%. The shareholder fees, which come in the form of  commissions and redemption fees, are paid directly by shareholders when purchasing or selling the funds.

The advantages of investing in mutual funds are diversification, economies of scale, easy access, professional management and individual-oriented investment. So, without any hesitation, we can start investing in good mutual funds.
