407. Ugadhi

Ugadhi is the New Year day for Kannada people. People undertake new ventures during Ugadhi as it is considered to be an auspicious time for doing so.  Legend says that Lord Brahma began the creation of the universe on the Ugadhi day. He then went on to create days, weeks, months, and years in order to keep track of time. Thus, Ugadhi is believed to be the first day of the creation of the universe.  One of the names of Lord Vishnu is Yugaadikrit, which means the creator of the Yugas or ages. He is worshipped on this day for this reason.

People prepare for this festive occasion by cleaning and washing their houses and buying new clothes. When the day dawns, they decorate their houses with mango leaves and rangolis.  Family members take an oil bath and wear new clothes.  Fresh flowers and incense sticks adorn the altar in the households. Then, they perform the ritualistic worship to pray for good health and prosperity in the coming year.  They do puja for the new Panchangam. The Ugadhi Pachchadi is the typical dish associated with the festival. This dish is prepared with jaggery and  neem flowers.

One of the main events of Ugadi is predicting the future. Since this day marks the beginning of a new year, people are too eager to know what’s in store for them. As such, they assemble at the temples to hear to the calendar of events. This event is also known as panchangasravanam.

Happy Ugadhi.
