296. Sree Guru Raghavendra Mahimai – IV

Before taking sanyasa, Sri Raghavendra was given the task of preparing the sandalwood paste by mutt assistants. While preparing,  Rayaru chanted “Agni Suktha”. The sandalwood paste was given to everybody and they applied it on their body. Soon everyone could feel the burning sensation. Then Rayaru started to chant “Varuna suktha” to cool the body of all.

While at Tanjore, Rayaru was asked to stay there as the kingdom was affected due to a severe famine. Due to His divine power, the situation improved. The king,  to show his gratitude,  presented Rayaru a necklace. Rayaru put it in  Homa Kunta. The king thought that Rayaru insulted him. Rayaru prayed to Parasurama(the indweller of fire God) and got back the necklace & satisfied the king.

Once a harijan gave mustard seeds to Rayaru and He asked to use them for cooking. A devotee named Srinivasacharya did not want to eat the theertha prasadham with the fear of committing a mistake, if eaten. He asked manthrakshatha from Rayaru before leaving. Rayaru  did so but the manthrakshatha turned black. Srinivasacharya realised his mistake and requested Rayaru to forgive him. Rayaru blessed him and manthrakashatha turned to original colour.

295. Sundaikkai masiyal

Ingredients required :

Turkey berry(Sundaikkai) – 1/4 kg

Tomato(big) – 1

Green chilly – 2

Homemade sambar powder – 1/2 tsp

salt – 1/2 tsp

turdal – 100 gm

gingerly oil – 1/4 tsp

turmeric powder – 1/4 tsp

asafoetida – 1/4 tsp

cooking oil – 1/2 tsp

mustard seeds – 1/2 tsp

curry leaves – one small bunch

Method of preparation :

Cut tomato into small pieces. Slice green chillies. In a bowl put tur dal(thuvaram paruppu), turmeric powder, gingerly oil, one cup water, sundaikkai, tomato pieces and green chillies. Pressure cook for 20 minutes. When it becomes cool, mash with a ladle. In a kadai, put cooking oil and do seasoning with mustard seeds and asafoetida. Put the mashed mixture and add salt. When it comes to a boil, put curry leaves and switch off the gas. The beautifully cooked sundaikkai masiyal is really very good in taste. I need not tell the health benefits of sundaikkai.

294. The person who inspired me – Part IV

I want to say some more information about Swami  Vivekananda  before I conclude.

In British-ruled India, Vivekananda gave a new colour to the national movement throughout India. Sri Aurobindo regarded Vivekananda as the one who awakened India spiritually. Mahathma Gandhi considered him as a social reformer as he helped to cut the dead wood of tradition. Rajagopalachari(Rajaji) remarked  that Vivekananda saved India by saving Hinduism. Subash Chandra Bose called him as the maker of New India. Rabindranath Tagore mentioned that if anybody wants to know about India, he has to study Vivekananda’s writings. Jawaharlal Nehru wrote about him as Vivekananda came as a tonic to the depressed and demoralized people.

According to Vivekananda,”Religion is science of consciousness”. The universal conception frees religion from the holds of superstition and makes it highest pursuit of knowledge, freedom and happiness. Vivekananda’s concept of potential divinity of soul makes life meaningful and worth living. He said that we should be pure because purity is our real nature, our true divine self or athma. Similarly we should love and serve others because we all are one in the supreme spirit known as paramathma. Vivekananda built a bridge between Indian and Western culture.

Swami Vivekananda gave a clear cut profile to Hinduism. He brought harmony by unifying different sectors of Hinduism. He raised voice in defence of Hinduism. He faced grave challenges and he met them boldly by integrating the best elements western culture in Hindu culture. He elevated social service to the status of divine service.

Swami Vivekananda has said that even after he laid down his body he would continue to work and inspire young generation people to carry on his unfinished work. At Kanyakumari, the Rock Memorial  which stands in his name is a unique symbol of unity and purity. When he reached Kanyakumari in 1892, he was suffering from hunger and thirst. He was exhausted and  had no money to pay to boatman to travel by boat. He swam across and reached the rock. He sat there for three days and meditated on Mother India who for him is incarnate of Divine Durga. He thought about the past, present and future of India. He took a decision to travel throughout the world to spread India’s religion  and culture.

I hope the person who inspired me will also inspire you also.

293. Stay cool in the summer

Every year, we used to say,”This year it is very hot”.

First thing we have to do is to drink  a liquid every two hours during daytime. It may be water, lemonade or coconut water. Please avoid ice cold  water and bottled drinks. We will get immediate relief from burning heat if we drink a cup of warm water. Taking fresh fruits or fruit juice without sugar will also help. Fruit salad or vegetable salad will give the energy needed. The  watermelon fruit is ideal for summer. We have to avoid eating oil-fried items. Eating spicy food  is not advisable.

We have to wear  loose fittings, preferably cotton. If we have to go out in hot summer, we have to cover the head with scarf or carry an umbrella.  When we go out in a vehicle, we have to park it in a shady area. As far as possible, wandering in the hot sun should be avoided. Taking cool shower twice a day will keep the body cool.

Last, but not the least, take a vacation and move to a hill station. There is no need to visit all the places in that hill station. Take rest and enjoy nature so that your body and mind will become cool.

 

292. Panguni Uthiram

Panguni Uthiram is very auspicious to start any good deed in life.

Many divine weddings took place on the full moon day in the tamil month of panguni.  Goddess Parvathi and Lord Shiva blissfully married on this day.  The weddings of Rama with Sita, Lakshmana with Urmila, Bharatha with Mandavi and Chathrukana with Sruthakeerthi also took place on the Phalguni Uthara(panguni utharam) day.  Lord Muruga married Dheivanai on this day. The devotees of Lord Muruga flock in thousands with “pal kavadi” to Muruga temples.  Chandra’s marriage with Daksha’s daughter also took place on the same day.

Mahalakshmi took avatar from thiruparkadal on panguni utharam day. Brahma got the boon of keeping Goddess Saraswathi on his tongue, on this day. Lord Aiyappa(Sastha) was born to Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu(Mohini) on phalguni uthara  divas.

Phalguni poornima day is celebrated as Holi(the day on which  Holika(sister of Hiranyakasibu) was killed.

Panguni uthiram paves the way for a happy married life.

290. Kambu dosai

Just for a change, I prepared dosa using mambu(bajra). The taste is really good.

Ingredients required :

kambu dosai

Kambu – 1 cup

Idly rice – 1 Tbs

Urud dal – 1/4 cup

Fenugreek seeds – 1 tsp

coconut(grated) – 2 tbs

Salt – 1/2 tsp

Cooking oil – 1 tsp

Method of preparation :

Soak kambu, idly rice, urud dal and fenugreek seeds for 4 to 5 hours. Grind it finely with salt and cocunut. Leave it for 5 to 6 hours for fermentation. Then, make dosa in the usual way with little oil. The soft and tasty kambu dosa is good for health. We have to take kambu often in some form, to beat the hot summer.

289. Magical moments in life

When an incident in our life makes us happy again and again, we call it as a  magical moment. It could be simple but the special feeling it created lasts forever. When our dear and near ones are happy, the happiness is spread all around & makes us happy.

Daily we do cooking. But, sometimes we get appreciation from others that the dish is nice or we ourselves feel that it is tasty. Enjoy the happiness for some time. Similarly, the speech or deed of our children might have captured our heart. We should store that magical moment in our mind and enjoy. We or our dear ones might have succeeded in a tough job or competition. We should not leave it as it is. We have to cherish and share our happiness with our close kith and kin.

We all want to avoid suffering and live with happiness. When a person is ill or live alone, we have to go in person and recollect the sweet memories of his/her magical moments so that he/she comes out of loneliness and sadness. We should not talk about bad happenings in others’ life.

We should leave the thought that a life of fulfillment is reserved for lucky guys only. Everybody can get it by creating magical moments in life. We have to make time to cherish magical moments with family and friends.  When we meet new persons with same wavelength, we should not miss the opportunity to continue their friendship.

Not only persons, beauty of nature, reading a good book or watching a decent movie can also create such a magic in life. We have to search for chance to get them again and again. Occasionally, we have to come out of template life and enjoy new things. Visiting  new places will also be helpful to get magical touch in life.

So, be ready to celebrate magical moments in life.

288. The person who inspired me – Part III

I was sharing some information about Swami Vivekananda in Part I & II. Today I want to say about some of his  thoughts, which are very much helpful to our life.

The waves raise, fall down, disappear and raise again in a lake. Similarly,  in our mind thoughts raise, fall down but raise after some time. These thought-waves become finer and finer, when they raise again and again.

To succeed in a deed, we have to take up an idea, make that one idea our life, dream of it, think of it and live on that idea. Let the brain, body, muscles, nerves and every part of our body be full of that idea and just leave all other ideas alone. This is the way to success.

Fill the brain with high thoughts, highest ideals , place them day and night before you and out of that will come great work.

Each work has to pass through these stages – ridicule, opposition and then acceptance.

Your life is reflection of your thoughts.

If you don’t design your life plan, chances are you’ll fall into someone else’s plan. Guess what they would have planned for you. Not much.

People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did but people will never forget how you made them feel.

If the obstacle is below you, jump over. If it’s above you, crawl under it.

We should not forget those who are helping us. We should not hate those who are loving us. We should not cheat those who believe us.

Anything which makes us weak physically, intellectually and spiritually we have to reject it as poison.

Talk to yourself atleast once in a day. Otherwise, you may miss a meeting with an excellent person in the world.

Relationships are more important in life but it is important for those relationships  to have life in them.

Arise, awake and stop not until the goal is reached.

We cannot  believe in God until we believe ourselves.

The world is a big gymnasium where we come  to make ourselves strong.

All the powers in the universe are already ours. It is we who have put our hands before eyes and cry that it is dark.

Let us try some of the above in our life.
