286. Touching love story

kuroki's garden

Mr & Mrs. Kuroki were running a dairy farm with 60 cows in Shintomi town, Miyazaki Perfecture, Japan. Due to diabetes, Mrs. Kuroki lost her eyesight suddenly. Mr. Kuroki became very upset on seeing the condition of his wife. She shut herself from the outside world and began living a life of seclusion in her house.

Mr. Kuroki saw pink colour shibazakura flower plant in his farm one day. Its colour and smell attracted him. He worked for two years to create a garden filled with shibazakura flowers. Even though, it is a private residence, Mr. Kuroki allows visitors to see their garden. About 7000 visitors visit this garden during March and April. They not only enjoy the beauty of the flowers but spend time with Mr. and Mrs. Kuroki.

The flowers and the visitors brought back a big smile in the face of Mrs. Kuroki. People praise Mr. Kuroki for bringing blossom in the life of Mrs. Kuroki. See, how the elderly couple turned their sad life into a beautiful one. Let us congratulate them.

284. Mahamaham

We all know that  Kumbakonam is an ancient, holy  and beautiful city. The masimagam is an annual event which comes during masi month on the maga nakshathra day.  Once in twelve years, when the planet Jupiter enters Leo sign, a grand festival is celebrated at mahamaham tank. Millions of people gather at Kumbakonam to have a dip in the tank.

After the end of each era, the whole world immerses in a deluge on account of the wrath of  Lord Shiva, for the sins committed by the human beings in the earth. Lord Brahma recreated the new world during the beginning of Kali Yuga.  A divine pot reached the holy spot in Kumbakonam and Lord Shiva reached there as a hunter & broke the pot with an arrow. The pot broke into many pieces and scattered around, which became the cause for so many temples in the town. Brahma prayed to Shiva to allow devotees to visit the tank during the sacred occasion. It is believed that all the Gods and celestial bodies visit there during mahamaham.

There is another saying that all the water bodies reach there and enrich the tank with all minerals. The purificatory bath in the tank is believed to remove sins and it is equal to the holy dip in all the rivers of India. The temple cars of major temples in Kumbakonam come around the city on the festival night.

Let us atleast pray to God on mahamaham day if we are not able to visit Kumbakonam.

283. The person who inspired me – Part II

I was telling about Swami Vivekananda in Part I. I want to share some more information about him.

I want to begin with his words, “Dare to be free, dare to go as far as your thought leads and dare to carry that out in your life”.

One day Vivekananda’s mother was very ill and on her deathbed.  Vivekananda didn’t have money to give her proper food and medicine. He went to his guru Sri  Ramakrishna and asked,”What is the use of spirituality when there is no job and money to take care of essential needs in life?” Ramakrishna asked Vivekananda to pray to Kali to fulfil his needs. Vivekananda sat for prayer before Kali and prayed for hours together but he could not ask Her anything for himself.

Once a social reformer told Vivekananda, “I  want to support women. I want to reform them”. For that Vivekananda replied, “Just leave them alone. They will do what they have to do. It is not that a man has to reform a woman. If he just gives room, she will do what is necessary”.

In the beginning, when he gave lectures in India, there was no response. But, after finishing lectures in western countries, he got a warm reception in India.  He traveled throughout India and inspired many people by his speech. In foreign countries he spoke about India’s spiritual heritage. In India he addressed social issues such as uplifting people, eliminating the caste system, promoting science and industrialisation, poverty and ending colonial rule.

He inspired Jamsetji Tata to set up a reseach and educational institute but when he was offered to head the institute, he declined.

Vivekananda propagated that the essence  of Hinduism was best expressed in Adi Sankara’s Advaita vedantha philosophy.

Vivekananda believed that a country’s future depends on its people and his teachings focused on human development.

I will share some more information about Vivekananda in my next blog.

281. Car free day in India

car free dayCar free day is being observed in many countries in the world. World car free day is celebrated on 22nd September. The motorists are encouraged to give up the car for a day. The politicians ask the public to travel by cycle or by public transport on that day.

In Delhi, the public welcomed this movement very much. On 22nd of every month, many people are not using their car and getting accustomed to travel by cycle or bus. The Delhi Transport Corporation has deployed special shuttle service on that day. Even many ministers took part in this movement happily.  Many people liked to walk on that day.

In many big cities of India, people are interested in taking part in the movement. In Coimbatore, for many weeks car free streets are seen in many places from 7 A.M. to 10 A.M.  Many people enjoyed by doing cycling, jogging, walking,  yoga,  zumba, dancing  and much more.

The air pollution on that day is considerably reduced.  This is a humble beginning towards getting people to use public transport. The volunteers have come forward to promote the campaign. The social media is also taking part to make the movement a success.  Enjoy car free day.
